Checking In

I woke to a snowy wonderland this morning...the last time I can remember a snowstorm like this in March, I was a freshman in college at home for spring break. It was eerily quiet, just watching the snow fall, an endless blanket of white from above. Just when I thought I left the cold weather in Chicago, haha.

I've been back in NoVa for almost a week, and I miss this little guy terribly. (I miss MG too!) I wasn't nearly as productive as I had planned, due to morning naps with Minos and his demands to sit in my lap whenever I was working on some embroidery. I can't wait to see him and MG again, hopefully in a couple of weeks once the weather has warmed up.

More beauty purchases...the only thing that isn't new in that photo is the blush on the right (R&R Spank). I'm giving everything a trial run, but there are some definite winners in my book already - the NARS Creamy Concealer in Custard applies like a dream, and covers the circles under my eyes so well! Bonus? It feels light, and it doesn't get caught in the fine lines under my eyes. The Ben Nye Banana Powder is pretty awesome as well - it's finely milled, and that little bottle will likely last me forever. Also pictured is Hourglass Veil Primer, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light, and Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundation.

Using all of the products above, my makeup lasted a good 8 hours without any oil surfacing on my t-zone. It settled by then to give me a nice dewy finish, and around 10 hours there was enough shine to want a blotting paper. I'm trying the primer and banana powder with different foundations and BB creams to see how it works with other formulas, and I'm trying the Bourjois foundation with other primers and setting powders, but it's great to know this combination will really make my makeup last.

I've been busy working on adding new items to my shop, including something with these delightfully miniature macarons. My workshop looks like a small patisserie, and I love it!

If you ♥ macarons as much as I do, there's a giveaway on my shop's facebook page to win a Totoro macaron well as 2 mystery items and a Hello Kitty makeup brush case.

This little charm was a labor of love - Totoro was hand embroidered onto linen, and everything was stitched by hand to form a tiny coin purse. It won't keep many coins, but you could use it to keep some small jewelry safe while you travel. Chibi and Chu charms were drawn and colored by hand onto acrylic, and hang from silver plated chain sprinkled with silver leaves and green and white Swarovski beads. It comes with a small clip to dangle from a purse or bag. Click on the photo above for details on how to win it, and other items, from my shop this week, or visit the link below:

Drugstore Purchases: Nivea and Pantene

I recently purchased a few things at the drugstore while I've been visiting MG in the Windy (and cold) City...

Nivea Extended Moisture Hand Cream
my hands have been dry from the cold, dry air here so I needed something extra moisturizing. This lotion is a tiny bit greasy but my hands have been been super soft while using it.

Nivea Lip Butter in Caramel Cream Kiss & Raspberry Rose Kiss -
finally found these lip butters after seeing  posts online raving about them, and they're winners for me! I finished a tube of the Nivea balm before coming out here, and while these aren't as hygienic as a tube of balm, they're creamy and light and smell/taste delicious!

Pantene Expert Collection Age Defy Kit
full of vitamins and caffeine to restore bounce and luster, and counteract the signs of aging hair (greying, thinning, split ends, breakage, frizz, lackluster color, dryness)

I was mainly interested in the Thickening Treatment (clear bottle), but I saw the intro kit at the store and thought it was a good price (about $12 at CVS) to try all three products. While my hair is long, it's not as thick as it used to be, and I'm finding more and more grey/white hairs showing up. After a bad experience with Clear shampoo and conditioner (the products smelled great and made my hair shiny, but I was shedding handfuls of hair while using it), my hair has thinned out quite a bit and I need some help to get it healthy again.

While the Thickening Treatment is supposed to be used daily, you can still see results - albeit at a slower pace. I use it after I wash my hair, but I don't wash my hair every day - more like every other day right now. I'm still in the 2 week trial period, so I'll have a full review once I've had more time to use the products, but so far I like all the products.

What have you bought at the drugstore lately?

Snow Day in Chicago

After 2 major blizzards while living in Philly, the past winter has been extremely mild - a dusting of snow in DC a few times, and flurries in Chicago during my visit. Yesterday was another story - a solid 6-8 inches fell through the course of the day, and an impromptu snowball fight was scheduled in Wicker Park.

MG and I bundled up and headed out to check out what was dubbed "Snowbrawl 2013" - I was thankful for the down jacket I bought for my trip; I was nice and toasty the whole time! It was great to see people prepping for the fight by making ammo ahead of time...

Although the battleground changed from around the fountain area to the open field behind it...

MG and I stayed off to the sides, since I was taking photos, but I still got hit with a rogue snowball. No idea where it came from or who threw it, but that's part of the fun of a snowball fight this large.

Here's a little portion of the fight - each side would sporadically charge the other side before retreating a few steps. We left before a winner was determined, but it was an entertaining evening after being cooped up indoors all day.

Regular beauty blogging will resume in the next post :)
